Christmas Jumper Day (often called National Christmas Jumper Day) is the one day of the year when it's fine to turn up to work as a walking Christmas tree. Schools, offices and teams across the UK wear their most festive knitwear and donate to Save the Children.

This guide has everything you need to make the day fun: ideas for schools and workplaces, a free bingo card, a sock-to-jumper matcher, and the option for anyone who'd rather not wear wool all day.

No Christmas jumper? Wear Christmas socks

Not everyone wants a novelty jumper. They're hot in heated offices and classrooms, they're worn once a year, and a lot of them end up in landfill in January. Festive socks are the easy alternative:

  • They're cheaper: ours are £5 a pair, against £15–£30 for a typical novelty jumper.
  • You'll wear them again, all through December and at home on Christmas Day.
  • They work with work clothes. Roll up your trousers for the team photo, roll them down for the client meeting.
  • No overheating. Enough said.

Other things that count: a Christmas tie, festive earrings, a Santa hat, or tinsel wrapped round a plain jumper you already own. If your workplace has a dress code, our men's Christmas socks guide shows which designs stay subtle under suit trousers.

Already have a jumper? Then socks are the finishing touch. Here's how to match them:

Christmas Jumper Day ideas for the office

  1. Jumper Day bingo. Print our bingo card, hand it round at 9am and award a prize for the first line.
  2. Best-dressed vote. Categories: most festive, most homemade, most likely to light up, best socks.
  3. Team photo. Jumpers on top, socks on show at the front. Post it on your company's social channels with a link to donate.
  4. Festive bake sale. Mince pies and gingerbread for a donation.
  5. Christmas quiz at lunch. £1 a team, winner picks the office playlist for the afternoon.
  6. Remote team? Camera-on jumper parade in the morning stand-up, and a festive-socks round for anyone not wearing a jumper.
  7. Ask about match funding. Many employers match what staff raise for charity.

Christmas Jumper Day ideas for schools

  1. Jumper swap. Families donate outgrown jumpers in November and buy a "new" one for £1–£2. Nobody has to buy new, and it raises money.
  2. Decorate your own. Children add tinsel, pom-poms and felt to an old jumper in a craft session the week before.
  3. Bingo for older classes. Our bingo card works brilliantly for Years 4–6.
  4. Staff vs pupils. Pupils vote for the most festive teacher. Teachers in Christmas socks get a bonus point.
  5. Christmas jumper parade in assembly, with a class prize for the most festive class.
