A Christmas Eve box is a small set of treats opened on the 24th to start Christmas properly. They're usually made for children, but grown-ups love them just as much: for a partner, your parents, a friend spending Christmas alone, or the whole household.
The best adult Christmas Eve boxes aren't a random pile of gifts. They're everything someone needs for one perfect, cosy night in. That's the idea behind everything below.
The Christmas Eve box formula
Pick one thing from each of these five, and the box feels complete, whatever you spend:
Our rule of thumb: spend the most on the wear and do items, because they're what get used again. Food and drink can be small; it's the ritual that counts.
What to put in a Christmas Eve box: 30 ideas for adults
1. Something cosy to wear
- Christmas socks. The classic filler, and the one item that's worn all evening. Our Snowy Village design (a snowy mountain village at night) was made for Christmas Eve.
- New pyjamas. The traditional Christmas Eve gift. Check the size first.
- A dressing gown or loungewear, if the budget allows.
- A blanket or throw for the sofa.
- A festive hat or headband for the photos.
2. Something to sip
- Hot chocolate: a good tin, or hot chocolate bombs.
- A mug they'll want to use every winter.
- A small bottle of something festive: Baileys, mulled wine, or an alcohol-free alternative.
- Speciality tea or coffee.
- Mulling spices for warming wine or apple juice.
3. Something to snack on
- Popcorn for the Christmas film.
- Mince pies or a mini Christmas pudding.
- Marshmallows for the hot chocolate.
- Posh crisps or cheese biscuits.
- Chocolate coins or a selection box. Nobody is too old.
- Gingerbread, shop-bought or a decorate-your-own kit.
4. Something to do
- A Christmas film, with one of our printable tickets.
- A jigsaw puzzle. Pick a size they can finish in an evening or two.
- A card or board game for the household.
- A Christmas book or a new novel.
- A crossword or quiz book.
- A craft kit: wreath-making or ornament painting.
5. Something to unwind with
- A scented candle: cinnamon, pine or orange.
- Bath salts or a bath bomb.
- A face mask.
- Hand cream in a winter scent.
- A sleep mask and pillow spray.
Little extras that make it personal
- A handwritten note. Often the thing people keep.
- A tree decoration with the year on it, to build a collection.
- A photo from the year in a small frame.

Making one family Christmas Eve box instead of several? Use one big crate and build it around a shared evening: a pair of socks or pyjamas for each person, one board game everyone can play, one film, a big bag of popcorn and hot chocolate for all. Put the house rules card from the printables on top so the evening has a plan, and let the youngest open the lid.

How to pack a Christmas Eve box
- Choose a box they can reuse. A wooden crate, a hamper basket, a sturdy shoebox covered in wrapping paper, or a gift bag. Crates come out again every year.
- Heavy and flat at the bottom: books, jigsaws, bottles lying down.
- Soft things in the middle: pyjamas, a blanket and socks fill the gaps and stop anything rattling.
- Treats and small things on top, so they're the first thing they see.
- Finish with the printables: the film ticket and house rules card on top, and an "Open on Christmas Eve" tag on the lid.

Frequently asked questions
What do you put in an adult's Christmas Eve box?
Something cosy to wear (socks or pyjamas), a festive drink, a snack, something to do (a film, game or book) and a small relaxing treat like a candle. One from each makes a complete night in.
What do you put in a Christmas Eve box for him?
Christmas socks, a craft beer or whisky miniature, posh crisps or jerky, and something to do: a quiz book, a jigsaw or a film he's been meaning to watch.
What do you put in a Christmas Eve box for a teenager?
Pyjama bottoms or a hoodie, Christmas socks, their favourite sweets, something useful like a charging cable, and a film the family can watch together. Keep it grown-up: no toys.
How much should a Christmas Eve box cost?
Whatever suits you: our example boxes come to about £15, £30 and £50. Spending more on one good item beats filling the box with cheap extras.
When do you give a Christmas Eve box?
On the afternoon or early evening of 24 December, so there's time to enjoy everything before bed. If you're posting one, send it in the week before Christmas with an "Open on Christmas Eve" tag.
What box should I use?
Anything sturdy and reusable: a wooden crate, a hamper basket, a shoebox covered in wrapping paper or a gift bag. Wooden crates can be brought out every year.
Are Christmas Eve boxes just for children?
Not at all. Adult boxes swap toys for grown-up treats (a candle, a bottle of something, a jigsaw), and they're especially lovely for anyone spending Christmas on their own.
